The Inspector of Custodial Services will carry out an inspection of the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre (MRRC). MRRC is a maximum-security correctional facility for men located at the Silverwater Correctional Complex in Silverwater, Sydney. The Inspector of Custodial Services acknowledges that MRRC is on Wangal Land. We pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of this land, and to Elders past, present and emerging.
The MRRC has been inspected by our office on two previous occasions. On the first occasion it was part of a thematic inspection examining crowding in NSW prisons, as detailed in the inspection report Full House: The growth of the inmate population in NSW. A focused inspection of MRRC was conducted in March 2022, and the findings and recommendations are outlined in The Inspection of the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre report.
The inspection will have regard to the Inspector of Custodial Services’ Inspection Standards for Adult Custodial Services in New South Wales, in conjunction with other relevant standards, legislation, policies, and procedures. The inspection will focus on custodial conditions for unsentenced inmates.
The Inspector of Custodial Services may consider any other matters relevant to this inspection.

We have announced an inspection of the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre (MRRC) and are accepting submissions from stakeholders (organisations or groups who have an interest in / involvement with the centre).
We are accepting submissions until 21 October 2026.
During our inspections, we gather information concerning what is working well and which areas require improvement. We gather a range of information (through meetings and in documentary form) from Corrective Services NSW, the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network and relevant Official Visitors. Submissions enable other organisations who may not be formally consulted to provide comments. There are two ways your organisation can provide comments about this correctional centre:
