Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre (Silverwater Women's CC) is located in the suburb of Silverwater, approximately 20km from the Sydney central business district. It is part of the Silverwater Correctional Complex, where the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre (MRRC) and Dawn de Loas Correctional Centre are co-located. Silverwater Women's CC is located on Dharug country, on the lands of the Burramattagal clan.
Silverwater Women's CC holds sentenced and unsentenced women with a minimum to maximum security classification. It is the primary reception centre for women in Greater Sydney.
We first inspected Silverwater Women's CC in 2015 as part of our Old and Inside report. We then inspcted the centre in 2017 as part of a thematic inspection focusing on the treatment and conditions of Women on Remand across correctional centres in NSW. We then inspected the centre in 2022 as part of the Silverwater Women's and Dillwynia Correctional Centres report.
On 20 March 2026 Corrective Services NSW announced the repurposing of Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre to a 30-bed female transit centre. The new Silverwater Women’s Transit Centre will commence operations on 1 October 2026. Mental Health inmates generally managed at Silverwater Women's CC will be moved to Dillwynia Correctional Centre (Dillwynia CC).
Due to the announcement, our previously announced inspection of Silverwater Women's CC will not proceed. The inspection of Dillwynia CC will occur as part of our 5-year inspection schedule. To allow Dillwynia CC time to transition and for Corrective Services NSW to effect necessary operational changes at the centre, the inspection will take place mid-2027.
