Inspector of Custodial Services

Prison Greens: the Clothing and Bedding of Inmates in NSW

Background

Clean clothing and bedding, in sufficient quantity and appropriate for the climate, are essential elements of good personal hygiene and decent living conditions in prison. These items are important for:

  • inmate quality of life
  • individual and group health

As a result of findings in previous inspections, and regular reports from Official Visitors, it became evident that there were issues with the supply and quality of clothing and bedding in some correctional facilities.

Where we inspected

We inspected three correctional centres and one metropolitan court cell complex. There were at least two visits to each site.

  • Cooma Correctional Centre
  • Oberon Correctional Centre
  • Emu Plains Correctional Centre
  • Surry Hills Court Cells

Recommendations

The Inspector makes 21 recommendations. These include systemic and facility specific improvements to the standards and distribution of clothing and bedding in the NSW prison system.

Report

Prison Greens: the Clothing and Bedding of Inmates in NSW Report was tabled in parliament and published in June 2017.
