Bathurst Correctional Centre

Background

This was the second inspection of Bathurst Correctional Centre (Bathurst CC). The centre was previously inspected by the ICS as part of the thematic inspection of  Programs, Education and Employment (PDF, 7.2 MB) in 2018. 

Where we inspected

Bathurst CC is located approximately 200km west of Sydney. It is a multi-classification correctional centre accommodating up to 780 sentenced and remand inmates. There are three distinct sectors housing male inmates, and a transitional unit at the centre for female inmates. 

Recommendations

The Inspector made 41 recommendations within the report. These include systemic and facility specific improvements in:

• Custodial conditions, including safety and security
• Treatment, care and wellbeing of inmates
• Programs, education, and preparation for release
• Resources and systems, inlcuding staffing and management
