Junee Correctional Centre (CC) is located on the land of the Wiradjuri people, in the town of Junee in the Riverina region of NSW. Junee is approximately 435km southwest of Sydney. The centre has a capacity of 1,279 across separate maximum, medium and minimum security areas for men and a small transitional unit for women.
Junee CC opened in 1993 and was the first privately operated correctional centre in NSW. The GEO Group Australia Pty Ltd (GEO) managed Junee CC since it opened 30 years ago. GEO is a wholly owned subsidiary of the GEO Group Inc, a publicly listed company with headquarters in the United States. The NSW Government announced in November 2023 that Junee CC will be operated by Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) following the expiry of the current contract in March 2025.
We have inspected Junee CC twice. The first inspection was in 2018 as part of a thematic inspection on access to Health Services in NSW Correctional Facilities. The second time we did a standalone inspection in August 2023, and the Inspection of Junee Correctional Centre 2023 report was tabled in NSW Parliament on 11 December 2024. We made 49 recommendations.
