Balund-a is a residential facility located on Bundjalung country in northern NSW. It is located 25km south of Tabulam and 80km southwest of Casino. It was designed as a diversionary program for Aboriginal men on community-based orders but also accepts eligible non-Aboriginal men.
The facility was previously operated as a minimum security correctional centre and can accommodate up to 75 people but the operational capacity during our most recent inspection was 40. A residential placement at Balund-a has a minimum duration of six months.
We have inspected Balund-a twice as part of the Inspection of the Residential Facilities and the Compulsory Drug Treatment Correctional Centre Reports that were tabled in NSW Parliament in 2020 and 2025.
